Matrimandir, India, Auroville

MatrimandirMatrimandir - “Temple of the Divine Mother” in Sanskrit - is both the physical and spiritual centre of Auroville, in the South of India.
Designed by French architect Roger Anger, Matrimandir’s inner chamber is meant to be a place for quiet and concentration, void of any ritual, where anyone can sit to meditate in silence.

At the centre, there is a sphere of pure crystal illuminated by sunlight channelled from an opening at the top of the chamber. Matrimandir is a 30m high spheroid resting on four pillars sunk deep into its foundation. Each pillar represents one aspect of the Divine Mother: Wisdom, Strength, Harmony and Perfection.

This structure has been built using 4,000 tons of cement supplied by Zuari Cement.
