With the blend of technology and pure architecture, competition winning Serero Architects, have designed Auditorium and Library on simple concepts and paying attention to sustainability and technology.

A building designed within the visual parameters of users, with integrated landscape around it and functionality within. This is the new Auditorium and Library Building for the University of Amiens designed on simple principles of sustainability and aiming to provide infrastructure to university.

Serero Architects have designed numerous infrastructural buildings; have created this building with a simplistic approach by responding to the site parameters and using sustainable technology to cater the users. The project was floated as a competition and the architects won the first prize, primarily because of the creative perception and creating a unique image by using concept of ‘Smart Skin’.

Site context was given importance by placing the auditorium building along the natural slope of site and thus responding to the natural site contours. Architects have given a fresh and welcoming look to the building by the use of white concrete along the ribbon windows on the top of the wall with integrated sun shields.

Sustainability is the foundation of all the design parameters incorporated within the design. The Natural lighting within the building of the library block is achieved excellently where the architects have given emphasis on maximising the natural north light within the block, done by means of sheds on the roof With an idea to create a space that will cater people from various cultures and exchange the ideas, opinions, thoughts – the space is created as a platform with unique architectural feature in between.

To ease the construction, the spaces are planned on rectangular grid, 1.8m X 7.2m, which has further smoothen the installation and functioning of various other components like lighting, ventilation, etc. With the idea of ‘Smart Skin’, the architects have implemented a sustainable façade system based on inspiration from pine cone scale, which function with the change in humidity levels of the air. Although there is extensive use of glass on the facade, the effect of he solar heat from the west side within the building is lowered by the wooden sun shading, which is monitored. The angle changes as per the direction of sun angle.

The building has variety of spaces within, with a natural and simple look from outside, offering two different quality of spaces integrated together by means of natural landscape and stone steps in between, achieving excellent articulation of spaces, ranging from interactive social spaces to create a personal space within.
