One of the largest gloabal coatings manufacturers, Valspar Corporation moved their offices from their old factory building to downtown Minneapolis.

Valsapar Corporation, one of the largest global coatings manufactures with roots in Minneapolis Paints, has grown tremendously in the past 30 years. A small company started in the 1800’s, now it has nearly 10,000 employees worldwide. The rapidly growing size of the company necessitated a move from the old factory building to larger premises. The new headquarters occupies two floors of the Ameriprise Building, situated in downtown Minneapolis.

Valspar’s business philosophy is based on providing good value and products and this is responsible for their success and growth. Hence the brief to the architects was to respect this philosophy and provide a highly functional space with a distinctive feel.

The block long mural, that acted as a local landmark for the old factory building has been incorporated into the design of the new interiors, to retain the distinctive feel. This has been achieved by the use of strong colors of paint The sophisticated, neutral materials palette tempers the power of the strong colors used and gives a sense of balance to the interiors.

The increased floor area of 131,000 square feet over the two floors, from the old building has ensured a design, which allows for an open plan and plenty of natural light as opposed to the old building which had a maze of small, poky and cramped offices.

The planning of the spaces on both floors, with the private offices and the meeting rooms being separated by circulation corridors, public areas and the service core allows for an enhanced working environment.  The private offices are situated along one length of the building, while the meeting rooms along the opposite length. Both areas get ample natural light, which adds to the illusion of spaciousness and brightness. The corridors of the private offices and meeting rooms are connected by public and shared areas, with the service core situated in the corners. This design creates an open work environment for the employees of Valspar and at the same time is remarkably functional. The bold paint colors used on the walls, lift lobby area and storage seems to visually tie the design together.
