Located in Nantes, France, a concrete monumentality arises from a site previously used for farming vegetables. The architects have contrived the design of this concrete structure, dubbed Bottière Chenaie, clad with multi-coloured stripes to recall the expressions of vegetable production industry.
The concept of the architects evolved around the basic principles to retain the essence of the site simultaneously redrawing the landscape and enhancing the connectivity between social housing and public spaces. Conforming to a mixed-use functionality, the concrete complex extends to encompass a school, housing and public amenities within itself. The functions are closely knit with each other to promote the urbaneness of the neighbourhood yet they maintain their individual identities at a segregated level. The form is modulated to grow within a rectangular block, extending over five compact levels. The domestic engaging spaces of the concrete housing are articulated as external courses to the rectangular geometry. The whole structure exudes a concrete exterior which links the block visually with the ambient surrounding. The outer skin is layered with vibrant chromatic facades that merge translucency with the solidity of concrete. The variance is a reflection of its multi-use activities. The interiors portray a concrete finish as an antithesis to the multiple colour use on its façade.
Symbolic in the architectural landscape, this concrete complex resonates a homogeneous image of the architect’s intention to define the multiplicity of the functions within a singular structure.
