To promote architectural work, Kim Utzon Architects have created Utzon Centre which combines simple architectural concepts and numerous materials.
To remember the works of famous Danish architect, Jorn Utzon, the Utzon Centre is a mixed use building with cultural centre, exhibitions, teaching of architecture, conferences, etc.
To create an architectural introspective the architects have worked on creating individual buildings around courtyard which acts as a central space creating a unique microclimate. The use of materials within the building and the articulation of spaces allow an informal movement through the centre and create continuous flow of spaces and offer spectacular views of the surrounding.
There is an intensive use of sculptural forms, from roofs to the other components, which have been rationalised via the use of pre-cast concrete, metallic roof work and brickwork which also respond the varied existing features around the site including harbour front, sea-view and existing park. Glance to the building reveals the dramatic structure of the auditorium, Boat Hall and the Library, where the metallic kalzip roofs are incorporated. However the rest of the structure is completed in pre-cast concrete and gives a raw finish on the exterior façade. Auditorium and Boat Hall is strategically placed facing the harbour whereas Library faces the naturally landscaped garden.
Internally there is transparency within the building with the incorporation of glass and access slits between the volumes. The Exhibition Building around are designed with unique characteristics which are also used as multifunctional space for other activities.
In addition of other building materials apart from pre-cast concrete, the columns are completed in brickwork, however with grayish brickwork so as to respond to the concrete completed façade treatment. The roof is cladded with metallic roof panels over the laminated wooden beams. The building is finished in white internally; however the internal facades facing the courtyard are again left in raw concrete which creates connectivity between the interior and the exterior with only brick columns painted white.
The Utzon Centre is truly a distinctive architectural expression finished in concrete, which connects various spaces informally with unique characteristics representing the form.
