Stringing a flexible aesthetic to compose the design elements from CNC components for legendary Conga Room Nokia Centre at L.A Live, is California-based architectural firm Belzberg Architects.
The Conga Room Nokia Center in Los Angeles has been a cultural landmark for decades. Refurbishing the renowned entirety with a versatile touch, are US-based architects Belzberg Architects. Spanning a multitude of programs like a large dance floor, a stage, multiple VIP areas, a full-service restaurant and three bars, each with their own unique environment, the space explores manifestations of CNC milled components. Replicating modularity, the space styles itself, merging a very low and equipment-filled ceiling that caters to the abundance of usage, in its design.
The influential facets of the design, spread over 1900sqft, were mainly aligned to being acoustically affluent, spacious enough to adhere to the capacity and one difficulty that arose was creating a space that would draw visitors from the first-floor restaurants and shops to the upper level. Given this background, the design evolved around inception of a ceiling that acts as the spatial organizer, the primary acoustical isolator/amplifier and event attractor. A veil that unifies the whole circulation, the dynamic composition was fabricated from a series of Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC)-milled painted plywood panels. The panelled jewel-like structure is shaped like diamond—a pattern that traces its origins to the classic Cuban Rumba dance step. Each panel was conceived as a petal wherein six petals formed a flower. Modelled after extensive parametric 3D rendering and building performance software, the fluidity of the structure explores various manifestations responsive to the functionality of each room. Expressing an invitation the restaurateurs below, the panels converge from the ground level to form the ceiling on the second floor. An outpouring of colour changes, through an avant-garde LED lighting system, captures the perfect ambience as a response to the moods of the shimmying dancers.
Other than the visual enhancement, the ceiling also provisions for multiple lighting systems, audio visual systems, mechanical systems and fire/life safety systems. The parametric rendering allows the progression of a complex piece that encourages both a dynamic visual environment as well as an acoustically vibrant interpretation.
The volumetric dialogue, with a netted and sculptural piece actively participating in the scene, boasts of an unforgettable architectural expression and experience.
