Reframing their personal experiences Finnish firm Rintala Eggertsson Architects designed ‘Kaluga Floating Sauna’ as part of the ‘Festival of Landscape Objects’- 2008
With an intention to showcase the Finnish and Irish bathing culture in other parts of the globe, Finland-based architectural firm Rintala Eggertsson Architects designed ‘Kaluga Floating Sauna’ as part of the ‘Festival of Landscape Objects’ held in Russia in July 2008.
Sami Rentala conceptualised ‘Kaluga Floating Sauna’ as a floating house with a capacity to shelter three to six persons at once. Residing on a rectangular pontoon covering an area of 64sqm the plan of the floating structure comprises sauna and a hot pool. The built form portrays architects cubist expression of design approach.
The design brief stated a floating structure on water weight of the materials played a very vital role in the selection of materials (which could not exceed nine-tones) and proportions of the built mass. Materials employed for the construction was mainly pinewood collected from the site surroundings. This intern contributed in provided a sustainable edge to the design. The design explored the vernacular sensibilities in a contemporary mould.
