The architecture of the Family House in Pozuelo De Alarcon designed by A-cero Architects is defined by its definite volumes, distinct planes and is built in concrete and marble, which makes it stand out as a great sculptural work.
The Family house designed by Luis H Segovia A-cero in Madrid, blurs the restrictions between architecture and art. The house, with its definite volumes, various planes and distinct levels and built in concrete and marble, appears as an architectural masterpiece. The geometrical clarity, material superiority and compositional elegance also make it stand out as a great sculptural work. Situated in Las Rozas, one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Madrid, the house stands out for its architecture, beauty, conviction and utility.
The plot is situated on a longitudinal north–south axis, which allows natural light into the house. The slope of the land is exploited in the construction of the house by building various levels. Each level opens out to the exterior and thus blurs the boundaries between the indoors and the outdoors.
The shell of the house is made of travertine marble and the concrete walls make the use of columns redundant, thus allowing large spans. The architecture of the house is framed by an exceptional landscape; a generous garden, with planters and flowerbeds, seems to extend from the house and follow the same fluid lines of construction as that of the house.
A large steel beam through an oversized door marks the entrance to the house. Once inside, the concept of windows is replaced by massive openings, which are possible due to the large spans allowed by the concrete walls. The proportionate sizes of the rooms, visibility of the exteriors, soft colors and the clean lines of the construction as well as the details create a wonderful ambience. The beige travertine marble, white walls and ceilings create a bright and spacious interior and reflect the white exterior shell of the house. There is an apparent link between the interior spaces and their outward continuity, which is marked by the obvious absence of doors replaced by large panels.
The décor is minimal and subtle with emphasis on the volumes and spaces created. The large house is built on three levels, the basement, ground floor and the first floor. The pedestrian access to the house is through the ground floor, which contains all the social areas of the house and service zones. The basement contains the facility quarters, the garage, the gym, a sauna, massage rooms, a cellar, music room, cinema room and an indoor swimming pool. A magnificent staircase on the ground floor visually connects the living areas, organized around a large marble cylinder, to the more private first floor. The ground floor plan has the social areas like the living room, lounge, and dining room placed on the right side whereas on the left side are the service rooms like a bathroom, cleaning room, kitchen, office, larder. An interior stair and an elevator connect this level to the basement and the first floor.
The first floor includes two children bedrooms with dressing rooms, bathrooms, a living room, a guest room with bathroom, the main bedroom with two dressing rooms and bathroom, a study and two small courtyards. The study is connected to the main bedroom by a glass walkway, which overlooks the main drawing room. The bathrooms are finished in ash wood and the study/library is arranged as a big box of books around the glass walkway.
The second swimming pool and the Jacuzzi is situated outdoors on the ground floor, in addition to several courtyards.
Design, functionality and clarity are the main concepts, which are evident in the design and the architecture of the house. Elegance and simplicity set this house apart from the rest and its modern architecture with stark volumes and planes characterize A-cero’s architecture.
