The Sri Govindaji temple is located in the Kangla fort of Manipur. It was built in 1846 AD during the reign of Maharaja Nara Singha. This ancient temple, where the kings used to worship, was built with the composite structure of brick and teak wood. Unfortunately, this temple was damaged thrice due to earthquakes, the major one being in 1869 and was rebuilt during the reign of Maharaja Chandrakirti and was inaugurated again in 1876 AD. Subsequently, the deity was removed from the premises and moved to a new temple and this temple was abandoned. Over a century of neglect led to natural decay and the led to major cracks in the structure and also the collapse of the roof.
