With an international competition entry, redevelopment of Plaza at Seville in Spain, designed by German based architect JMH is now turning into a reality.

Redevelopment of plaza in Seville city of Spain has created a landmark for this tourist destination with the construction of numerous ancillary areas and articulately designed spaces by the means of creating strong forms with the use of concrete.

The project was floated as an international competition in 2004 and the award winning German based architects, J Mayor H, have succeeded in creating an impressive imagination of their design.

Seville is one of the most famous tourist destinations of Spain. Thus, the demand was to create a landmark within the city so as for tourist to capture this image after leaving the city, as well as display culture and history of the city, by means of modern architecture.

The architect has worked on creating this existing urban landmark, lying between the dense medieval city, as an amalgamation of spaces holding different activities. Spaces now have contemplation, leisure as well as commerce and thus create business for various kinds of people.  The ongoing innovative construction will provide a developed infrastructure to the city and has activated the existing spaces.

The archeologically important site has an ongoing construction work, with the extensive use of concrete, structures are in the shape of mushroom and areas will also have farmers market, bars, restaurants and interplay of terraces, providing panoramic views. The focal point of entrance is the huge designed columns with the use of concrete. The main architectural element of the redevelopment, named as ‘The Metropolitan Parasol’, gives a new modern identity to the project, aiming to provide shade during the day by creating a comfortable microclimate and a place to relax where it becomes an artificial sky during the night and have play of light and sound.  Space is beautifully designed so as to provide urban regeneration activities under the structure roof in addition to community interaction space.

The proposed market is designed in such a way so as to reactivate market participant’s connection with the area and strengthen the importance for the urban environment. The Elevated Plaza on the other hand responds to the need for a large, multi-functional urban meeting space in the old city centre of Sevilla.

The site, still under construction, has already become a contemporary landmark of the historic and the beautiful city, and creates equilibrium within the two by providing mixed use activities and dynamic form with the extensive use concrete.
