The_rationalizer.jpg The Rationalizer

The Rationalizer is an ‘emotion mirror’ that reflects the power of the user’s feelings. The system consists of two components, the EmoBracelet and the EmoBowl. The bracelet works as the measuring standard for the arousal component of the user’s emotion recognised by a dynamic light pattern on either the EmoBracelet itself or on the EmoBowl. The dynamic light pattern changes according to the emotional intensity, which alerts the user to relax and think over their actions.

Skinput

‘Skinput’ is a creative solution resulting from the collaboration between researchers at the Carnegie Mellon University and Microsoft. It allows users to simply tap their skin in order to control audio devices, play games, make phone calls and navigate hierarchical browsing systems. ‘Skinput’ uses a pico- projector to beam graphics onto a user’s palm and forearm, transforming their skin into a computer interface. Variations in bone density, size and mass, as well as, filtering effects from soft tissues and joints, mean that different skin locations are acoustically distinct. It contains five piezoelectric cantilevers that match sound frequencies to specific skin a location, allowing the system to determine which ‘skin button’ the user has pressed with surprising accuracy. It can detect 5 skin locations with 95.5 per cent accuracy, about the same as many actual touchscreen devices.

Recursive Pattern Process

Materials produced in modular units based on traditional industrial practices are inevitably confined to predictable, repeating patterns. A common example is the carpet tile, in which repeating pattern emerge despite the frequent desire for an evolving, non-repeative effect StudioStampa is dedicated to changing common perception about patterns. The company’s design concept is based on creating an evolving, non-periodic pattern that is in a constant state of permutation, thereby eliminating pattern predictability.
Using nature as their model, StudioStampa generates surface patterns that closely emulate the beauty of constant, ordered change occurring in the physical world. Their recursive patterns are generated by custom-developed software tools, and these patterns are utilised to manipulate a variety of materials for the use in interior and exterior applications.
