Launched on 10th April, 2010 in association with HP Designjet, HP Workstation and Nvidia, India’s first online design competition HP Skyline 2020 was open to architects, planners and architectural students all across India. The competition outlined/invited fresh visual imaginations for skyline design, inviting concepts for an iconic structure that can change the perception of an urban skyline.

 

Noted Architects Sen Kapadia, Christopher Charles Benninger, Hirante Welandawe and Patrick Schumacher constituted the jury panel. The competition attracted over 74 entries from all over India.

 

  • The National winners were architects Anto Gloren and Sayali Athale for their vivid image of the future skyline in the form of a culturally and ecologically sustainable vertical city.
  • The zonal winners were architects Praveen Kumar, Robin Soloman, Shwetha Viswanath & Gayathri M for the South zone with their concept of a floating city.
  • The North zone winners were architects Akshay Goyal and Amit Jangra for a design that drew inspiration from the existing Indian urban contexts and its various social elements.
  • Winning the Zonal Category for the East zone were architects Cibi Coimbatore Balakrishnan and S. Rakesh for efficaciously generating a modern edifice by integrating Indian elements.
  • While the winners from the West zone were architects Vinay Sonone, Mugdha Mankikar and Apurva Darwehkar for a design with an interesting non-planner mathematical approach.

 

The other entries focused on various issues that our skylines face in the modern urban context. Some of the entries discussed notions of the future skylines and issues of sustainability. Green skylines and suitability was a concern for most of the architects who entered in the HP Skyline 2020 design competition. The entries even went to the abstract realm of proposing inverted skylines and vertical sky neighbour hoods. Cities from all across India were represented by architects with cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Pune to name a few.

 

On 8th September, all the winners of the HP Skyline 2020 directed their route to New Delhi, which was the location for the ostentatious Award Ceremony. The event was graced by the presence of veteran architect Raj Rewal, who set the tone of the event through his insightful inaugural address, and also the Director of HP Large Format Printing, Asia Pacific, Guayente Sanmartin. Architect Sen Kapadia delivered the jury address on behalf of the eminent jury panel that included Patrik Schumacher, Hirante Welandawe and Christopher Charles Benninger. After the phenomenal success of the competition HP vehemently looks forward to continue its journey with its endeavours to encourage such innovative ideas and concepts.
