Shimul has a Masters in Urban Planning from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor along with a Govt. Diploma in Architecture from Academy of Architecture, Mumbai, India. As an architectural trainee when she was a student of University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1986-1987), she has worked with the Energy Cost Avoidance project. As an Architectural Assistant, Shimul worked for RED Architects at California, USA where she participated in the design and construction documents for a Train station and a Type 5 construction school building (8/1988 – 7/ 1989). She founded and is the Principal Architect of ‘SJK Architects’ since 1990.

Shimul is a Visiting Professor at the Academy of Architecture as a thesis guide. She has been a Teaching Assistant for ‘Planning for Developing Countries’ (Fall '87) and 'Introduction to Urban Planning/ Architecture' (Winter '88) at the University of Michigan wherein her responsibilities included leading discussions, grading assignments and occasionally lecturing. She was also a Teaching Assistant for “Introduction to Women’s Studies” (Summer’88) and was the Editor for ‘Dimensions’, a journal for the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan, in April ’87 and ’88. Her recognitions include awards at a national level for Office Design (Large) for Synergy Lifestyles at Kalachowky in the IIID-MK awards in 1998, Interiors in Heritage Buildings for Fabindia at Kalaghoda in IIID-MK awards in 2004, Excellence in Industrial architecture for Synergy Lifestyles at Karur in the JIIA awards in 2005, Interiors for Fabindia 1st floor (Retail-Large) at Kalaghoda in the IIID-MK awards (Regional) in 2007, Interiors for Fabindia 1st floor (Retail-Large) at Kalaghoda in the IIID-MK awards (National) in 2007 and Interiors for Orra Intergold gems Pvt. Ltd. (Retail Interiors) at Hughes Road – Runner-up-West zone- IIID-MK awards (Regional) in 2008. Shimul’s international awards include the Tucker Design Award in 2006 for Excellence in the use of Stone for Synergy Lifestyles at Karur.
