How can steel be classified?

Steel can be classified according to:

  • Its composition: carbon or low alloy.
  • The way it is manufactured by open hearth, basic oxygen or electric furnace methods.
  • By the hot rolling or cold rolling finishing methods.
  • The product forms, such as bar plate, sheet, strip, tubing or structural shape.
  • By the de-oxidation practice like killed, semi-killed, capped or rimmed steel.
  • Its microstructure: ferritic, perlitic and martensitic.
  • The heat treatment: annealing, quenching, tempering and thermo mechanical processing.
  • By the strength level.
  • Quality description like forging quality and commercial quality.
