In this interview Mr. Winston Teng Shu, Principal of Integrated Design Associates, makes a point that its important for architects to learn all aspects of engineering and the current state-of-the-art system, to be able to work with different disciplines. He talks about his exchanges with different professionals and the exposure to different kinds of technology and products that improve the quality of our lives. He talks about his experience of working on the Hong Kong airport where they used energy efficient systems to air condition a volume of 24 meters. So unlike the popular myth that it is difficult to air condition larger spaces Mr. Winston Teng Shu says “the larger the building the more efficient the air conditioning, which goes against the conventional way of thinking, that if you have a large volume you must put a lot of air and move around a lot of air to keep it cool.”.
Mr. Winston Teng Shu’s recent work includes the iconic riverside development in Shanghai and the LEED Platinum certified landmark commercial development in China. He also talks about how to utilize floor space to its maximum and explains its application in his Shanghai project. So building becomes “cone-shaped”. He shares his experiences of working at Norman Fosters practice and executing projects and his experiences of using innovative modern technology in this interview.
