In this interview Prof. Enzo Siviero talks about the basic challenge in structural design. He also elaborates on the various bridge designs that he is undertaking across the world. One very interesting example that he discusses is the Messina Bridge that is being built as a living bridge in which the pillions become skyscrapers. ”Actually when you have huge bridges you cannot put house along a bridge which is 1km span, but you can use the pillions in that case you already have the main structure its just the matter of dressing it, putting some thing together and transforming it the naked structure into a real living element which pertains to the human life.“, he says. Being a structural engineer himself he feels that there is actually no difference in architects and structural engineers. He discusses about the roles of both the architects and the engineers and says that both the professionals must be sensitive and understand about the other person’s point of view.
